European Union The European Union is not a federation like the United States. Nor is it simply an organization for cooperation between governments, like the United Nations. European union is in fact, unique. Process of integration started in 1951 when the Treaty of Paris was signed between six founding states: France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg. In 1951 European Coal and Steel Community was founded. In 1957 Treaty of Rome redefined the integration and European Economic Community was founded. With the Treaty of Maastricht the EEC became European Community and the European union was finally introduced. The EU institutions: European Parliament: Reperesents the citizens of EU integration and members of parliament are directly elected by citizens. European Commission: The body that represents the interest of EU as a whole and implement the EU law. The Council of the European Union: Represents the individual member states and their interest. It is important to explain that acquis communitaire is: the total body of EU law accumulated thus far which must be adopted by the member state when entering this integration. EU today: Today EU has 27 member states. The membership is based on three major criteria: political stability, economic criterion (liquid and competitive market) and adoption of acquis communitaire and harmonisation of laws with EU laws. Probably Croatia will soon became 28th member state. Glossary - riječnik implement a law - provesti zakon harmonise - uskladiti criterion - kriterij (criteria-kriteriji - nepravilna množina riječi criterion) acquis communitaire - pravna stečevina EU treaty - sporazum, ugovor
